Habitat: waterways in the south east of the United States (Virginia and Florida).
It is sold in pet stores all over the world. Every year about 900,000 specimens are released into rivers, lakes and ponds by citizens often unaware that it is a practice prohibited by law. It is a highly invasive species that competes for food, space and nesting sites with our native marsh turtle (Emys orbicularis) contributing to the decline of its populations.

It was introduced into the river Po, where it threatens the survival of native species such as the lasca (Chondrostoma genei) and the chub (Leuciscus cephalus cabeda)
