The word "piranha" means "tooth fish" in a South American Indian dialect. Piranhas replace their teeth throughout their lifetime: new teeth grow within a couple of days. There are thought to be between 30 and 60 different species of piranha. The red-bellied is the most famous species.

Unlike their carnivorous cousins piranhas, tambaqui are omnivorous. Their large teeth are made for crusching seeds and nuts.
